🦶🏽 Full Home Disinfection Guide for Athlete’s Foot

How to Deep Clean Your Space and Stop the Spread for Good

Athlete’s foot is  a persistent fungal infection that can live on surfaces in your home and re-infect you over and over again if you don’t tackle it at the root. That means your healing doesn’t stop with creams or teas — it extends into your environment.

If you or someone in your home is dealing with athlete’s foot, here’s a full guide to disinfect your entire space, remove lingering fungal spores, and protect yourself from reinfection.

🔧 What You’ll Need:

A few strategic supplies will get you set up for success:

Cleaning Solutions:

Lysol Disinfectant Spray (for shoes, fabrics, furniture)

Bleach (for hard, nonporous surfaces and floors)

White vinegar (optional, for fabric or natural cleaning)

Laundry sanitizer (like Borax or Lysol Laundry Sanitizer)

Antifungal foot powder

Optional: Essential oils like tea tree, clove, eucalyptus, or lavender

Tools:

Mop & bucket

Spray bottles

Disinfecting wipes

Scrub brushes

Microfiber cloths

Laundry bags or liners

Vacuum with hose

Shoe dryer, fan, or access to sunlight

🏡 What to Clean — and How to Clean It

👣 1. Floors

Fungal spores can live on floors for weeks, especially in humid spaces.

Do this:

Mix 1 cup of bleach with 1 gallon of water.

Mop floors thoroughly and allow to sit for 10 minutes.

Rinse and let air-dry completely.

Repeat 2–3 times a week during an outbreak.

🧦 2. Laundry: Socks, Towels & Bedding

These fabrics can reinfect you if not sanitized properly.

Do this:

Wash everything in hot water (140°F or higher).

Add vinegar, Borax, or laundry sanitizer to each load.

Dry on high heat.

Wash socks daily, and bedding/towels every 2–3 days.

👟 3. Shoes

Shoes are one of the biggest hiding places for fungus.

Do this:

Spray the inside of shoes with Lysol or antifungal shoe spray.

Remove and spray insoles separately if possible.

Allow to air-dry completely overnight.

Dust with antifungal foot powder before wearing.

Rotate shoes daily and avoid re-wearing damp ones.

🛁 4. Bathroom

Warm, wet bathrooms are perfect breeding grounds for fungus.

Do this:

Clean showers, toilets, and tile floors with a 1:10 bleach-water solution.

Scrub grout lines and corners.

Wash bath mats in hot water weekly.

Disinfect high-touch spots like sink handles and floors.

Spray Lysol inside any bathroom shoes or slippers.

🪑 5. Furniture, Rugs & Common Areas

Spores can cling to fabric where your bare feet rest.

Do this:

Vacuum rugs and soft furniture thoroughly.

Spray with Lysol Disinfectant Spray.

Wipe leather or hard surfaces with bleach spray or wipes.

Wash removable covers and cushions, if possible.

🛏️ 6. Bedroom

The bedroom can quietly harbor fungal spores if not cleaned properly.

Do this:

Vacuum under the bed and mop floors.

Spray Lysol in shoes, slippers, and footpaths.

Wash sheets and pillowcases in hot water every 2–3 days.

Avoid walking barefoot on carpet.

🧺 7. Hampers & Laundry Bins

Dirty socks and towels are a hotspot for reinfection.

Do this:

Wipe down the inside of your laundry basket with disinfecting spray or bleach solution.

Use a washable liner or bag.

Wash liners weekly in hot water.
